Choosing a basin for your bathroom
It should be simple – after all, you just wash your hands or brush your teeth in it – but choosing a basin for your bathroom can be tricky. With a multitude of designs, styles and materials to choose from, which one is right for your bathroom?
The first thing you need to decide on is style: pedestal, a vanity, or just a basin suspended on the wall?
Small toilet rooms suit wall-suspended basins, but you need to consider the plumbing and drainage and fittings (there’s usually less room).
Pedestal basins fit in most spaces, including tight corners, and the pedestal hides the plumbing away neatly, but there’s less room for storage and limited work area (usually you’ll need to put the storage elsewhere in shelving behind a mirror for instance).
Vanity units usually create storage while giving you a basin plus a worktop, but they tend to take up more space. They’re great in family bathrooms where you want lots of storage, or multiple basins. If you choose a vanity you’ll need to consider the kind of basin with the mounting in mind. Do you want a drop-in or rimmed sink (cheap and cheerful), or will it be under-mounted (very fashionable right now), or even a bowl-type of sink mounted on top of the vanity (a bigger statement)? The material you choose can make a big design statement in itself: glass, ceramic, stone – the choices and colours are endless.
